Books [Updated Yearly]

Since January 2022 I  am reading10 pages a day. I prefer fiction, science fiction and fantasy mainly the ones that asks “what if” in a black mirrory way.

December 2022:

I managed to read 12 books on that year, almost 1 book a month and I would like to share them with you sorted by how interesting they are from my point view.

‎12- لوكندة بير الوطاويط: Ahmed Mourad hallucinatory experience.

11- 1919: Ahmed Mourad’s take on 1919 revolution.

10- The Expanse (1): Leviathan Wake: Series is on apple TV.

9- Foundation: from the father of classical science fiction, Isaac Asimov, I robot, Bicentennial Man, Foundation is written 1951, the main source of inspiration of star wars.

‎8- يوتوبيا: Scary, what if. 😅

7- The Expanse (2): Caliban War: Series is on apple TV.

6- Stories of your life and others: 8 Short stories, including the one made into the movie Arrival.

5- UBIK: Classical, written 1969, very hallucinatory.

4- Sea of Tranquility: Best science fiction 2022.

3- Recursion: Best science fiction 2019, Will be a show soon.

2- Dark Matter: Will be a show soon.

1- Project Hail Marry: Best Science fiction 2021, from the author of The Martian (Andy Weir) also the book is gonna be a movie staring Ryan Gosling as the protagonist.

December 2023:

Like last year, I decided to read every day 10 pages of fiction/science fiction books. That yielded yet another 12 books for this year. I am sharing with you my reads and personal ranking based on how much I was entertained while reading the book.

12- Abo elhol (ابوالهول), Ahmed Mourad, 2023

Latest publications of Ahmed Mourad, the novel is a based on the same super interesting main character Suleiman Elseyoufy as in the previous novel لوكندة بير الواطاويط, who is a very smart forensic photographer but also a schizophrenic narcissistic paranoid individual. What makes the novel and the character interesting is that you are reading his diary and you are seeing his broken unmedicated brain, how it functions and how it interprets the events and the actions of others. The problem is you don’t what is real and what is not in that case and that’s is left for you to decide. Compared to the first novel this one is so uneventful especially in its first half. Might be on purpose as you loose yourself if the sick brain of the character.

11- Upgrade, Blake Crouch, 2022

The latest but not the greatest book of Blake Crouch, it is about gaining superpowers by altering genes of an individual and genetic viruses and attacks. The new upgraded human species.

10- Murderbot diaries: All system red, Martha wells, 2017

This is a series of novellas written by Martha wells Introducing a Rogue Robot that has lots of personality insecurities and is very anxious about life. The robot that wants to watch TV series. The first book is basically introducing you to the main character in duty but the second book start to be about the Robot himself, his story, his purpose, and his anxieties… I wouldn’t recommend the series given the first book, but after the second book I would really recommend it. I think the author figured out what really resonate with the people and they stressed on them in the second book.

9- The Expanse: Cibola Burn, James S.A. Corey, 2014

8- The Expanse: Abadon’s Gate, James S.A. Corey, 2013

The 3rd and 4th book of the Expanse series. You can watch the first 6 season on amazon prime under the same name. The makers of the show tried to be faithful to the book series. The books themself are very consumer based read full of fights, action, descent characters, descent politics. But nothing too deep. Science is like very evolved to the point where all problems has solution the main problem is in where to find the right tool. The series is a glimpse of our human race will be in case we went an invaded/colonized space. How we end up always fighting about something for sometimes nothing else than human ego. When read this series it is like watching Avatar or an old cancelled show called Terranova by Steven Spielberg.

7- Murderbot diaries: Artificial Condition, Martha Wells, 2018

6- Thursday Murder Club: Richard Osman, 2020

Well, this one is a bit different from my usual taste, first it is a British fiction comedic mystery crime series of novels. Second, the protagonists are seniors group of people living in a nursing house some of them with ex-police experience and they take it upon themselves to solve unsolved old cases every Thursday. Until they found themselves caught in an active case taking place in the town they are living in. The book series tone feels like the movies from Edgar Wright: Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the dead…

5- Foundation: The second foundation, Isaac Asimov, 1953

Those two books are completing the Trilogy if the foundation written by Isaac Asimov after WW2. To be honest I learn a lot from this series, lessons that can be applied in my professional life or even in life in general. Loved science behind it, the story spanning 1000 year across 3 books all the flashy characters good or bad. I do recommend this series very much for anyone wanna understand how world really works from behind the scene. The Tv series has nothing to do with the books they only overlaps with episode 1 only.

4- Foundation: Foundation and Empire, Isaac Asimov, 1952

3- Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson, 1992

Published 1992. The Book that introduced the word Metaverse with its modern meaning. The book is a mix of Cyberpunk’s dystopia the game, the matrix, ready player one. The core idea of the book is revolving around languages and the way they affect humanity.

2- The institute, Stephen King, 2019

My first reading from Steven King, very interesting, reminded me of Stranger Things and Super 8 but much darker very dark actually and eerie. I loved the characters and its suspenseful storytelling.

1- Exhalation, Ted Chiang, 2019

Latest publication from Ted Chiang, He is famous with award winning short stories. The movie “Arrival” is based on one of the most famous short story called The story of our life released in his previous book. The new book Exhalation also contains multiple short stories. Based on my opinion the second book is much entertaining and interesting compared to first one. I liked when he takes some concepts such as entropy and base a story and universe on it transforming the scientific story into a fairy tale almost. In general most of the stories in this book are based on either a scientific concept or on a science fiction gadget that doesn’t (yet) the plot is sometimes being developed as in black mirror earlier seasons or in some other cases it just tries to explore the consequences that will be reflected on the society given those “fictional” circumstances. My pick of the year, Highly recommend.

Credited in my first feature film

In 2017, I was still living in Germany, Back then, I had a very specific vision of my future career.

I wanted  and still want to be a part of the entrainment industry from the technical side of things, whether in the games industry (hence my studies) or in the movies industry (visual effects, animation or motion capture).

I started planning for that and set some criteria of success or milestones  so that I can keep an eye on my progress over time, making sure I am not drifting away.

One of those milestones is to be credited in a movie and have my own IMDB page.

I started working on that right a way and I managed to get a job into a small visual effects studio in Munich. I was a bit lucky, one or two months after my employment the studio got contracted for its first feature film*.

I was working on that project as an R&D engineer for the motion capture and virtual cam system. We started shooting the movie in March 2017 in Cologne. The shooting should have taken 30 days.

Being on a set is super cool, it is an eye opening experience for anyone who wants to be in the industry. I was looking forward to it to be honest.

Unfortunately, 10 days in, I had some health complications and I couldn’t continue working on the project and I had to fly back to Egypt immediately.

The movie got released in October 2020, I had a quick look at its IMDB page,
I was hoping to find myself in the crew, but I wasn’t there.
I didn’t have access to the movie since it was in theater.
So, I decided to forget about it….

Today, after 2 years, I found the movie on a streaming service, I got curious, and guess what… My name was in the credits
Now I have my IMDB page with the first feature movie I worked on…

* Benjamin Blümenchen, is very known character for kids in Germany, you can compare it to Bakkar or Babar.
The movie didn’t do well at all. But who cares, it still counts :D

My Lego Collection [Constantly Updated]

Since my early childhood, my parents were always keen with my toys selection. They were always looking for something that teaches me something  new, that grows my imagination, that creates curiosity towards understanding how things works. Actually, they let me take apart my toys to understand how  they function and they were fine about that.

Lego sets are covering all that, including being taken apart, and being transformed to whatever you want. My passion for Lego never ended, I think it made me a better engineer to be honest. For that reason I am currently collecting some of their latest Lego Technic sets focusing on the Ultimate collection.

Here what as of now:

LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS Set 42056 [2704  Pieces]

LEGO Technic Bugatti Chiron 42083 [3599 Pieces]

LEGO Technic 42100 Liebherr R 9800 Excavator [4108 Pieces]

LEGO Technic 42115 Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 [3696 Pieces]

LEGO Technic 42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 [3778 Pieces]

AR Based Indoor Navigation

Left: The fused output of the navigation system visualized in a VR fashion and simulating the user trajectory in the building digital twin.
Right: The actual video feed when this trajectory was recorded.
Trajectory length: 70+ meters including the stairs.
Note: The shown markers in this video are not used for localization! they are used as anchor points only for evaluating the navigation system.

My master's thesis project was the result of a cooperation between the NavVis Navigation Team and TUM. The research is investigating the viability and practicality of using visual techniques incorporated with 3D building structure knowledge for indoor navigation. The proposed system is a hybrid of absolute visual positioning and relative visual tracking. The positioning is done using image based poses estimation approach relying on dense feature matching (using deep neural network) and the building's 3D structure. While the tracking is done with the help of Goolgle ARCore. This video shows the result of the strategic fusion between the absolute and relative data.
All the indoor scans were acquired using the NavVis M6 Trolley, one of the state of the art mobile scanning devices in the industry.

Prologue [Weight Loss Transformation]

I guess I reached the end of my weight loss journey. This doesn’t mean that I will stop losing weight or that I am gonna stop exercising. This only means that I broke the 100 kgs mark (63.5 kgs loss) that I have defined almost 2 years ago as my target weight.

I promised that I will share with everyone what I did during the last few months. Maybe my experience becomes helpful for someone out there...

But, before doing that I need to make some points clear:
-I am not a professional nutritionist.
-I am not a professional trainer.
-I am not claiming that what I did is the best way of losing weight.
-I am not recommending/forbidding anyone to do what I did.
-It is left upon you (the reader) to decide whether the content makes sense or not.

Then, what am I doing here?  :D
I will basically write what I did in a series of posts.
7 public posts describing the whole weight loss journey.

Why 7 posts?
I wanted to cover my mind state, physical state and emotional state not only diets or gym routines.
I believe that losing weight starts from your mind and how you do feel about yourself and others.
I don’t believe in going to doctors and letting them give you this diet or that life routine then starting following them blindly as if there is some magic that’s gonna happen. Doctors are good in keeping you healthy and in monitoring your physical state, however it’s YOU and only YOU, who decide to lose weight and actually doing it.

In my opinion, people with a BMI* near/more than 35, might find my posts useful rather than the others and the reason is, as you will see, that my start was a bit slow and steady, because when I decided to lose weight I decided to make it an experiment.

I decided to lose weight by doing the minimum amount of change in my life style. I believe that we "Obese people", We can’t start losing weight by eating everything healthy. I remember, one day, I was saying to someone who was offering to me an apple as a joke.
Nahh, thank you !!, this is too healthy for me :D

My point is, do not expect from a person who has a BMI > 35 to eat salads or eat a yoghurt and fruits at dinner. You are basically increasing the chances of him/her to fail.
Start with what you have!! Fix it bit by bit!! Change it bit by bit !! Optimize it!! Perfect it at the end!!
This is the main reason that made me wanna share my experience/experiment with you because I feel it is a bit different from the usual and more practical.

I will be writing my posts in English (Internet Language).
If anyone has any kind of questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Here are the posts titles:
Prologue (The one you are currently reading now)
Mind and Body State
The Tick
The Process
The Conclusion
What’s Next ?

I might add one more post at the end, if there is some FAQ or some extra content that does not fit in.

My name is Mina Saad,
I am 190cm/6’23 feet tall,
I was 162.5 kgs/360lbs,
Now I am 99kgs/220lbs...
Am I happy with what I have now?
Absolutely, 100%, Super Happy !!!
Am I satisfied with what I have now?
Not yet, I can do better ;)
Stay tuned for my next post ! I know you want to get to the conclusion  :)
Bear with me  :) you will understand :)

*BMI (Body Mass Index): Your BMI is a measurement of your body weight based on your height and weight. Although your BMI does not actually "measure" your percentage of body fat, it is a useful tool to estimate a healthy body weight based on your height. Due to its ease of measurement and calculation, it is the most widely used diagnostic indicator to identify a person's optimal weight depending on his height. Your BMI "number" will inform you if you are underweight, of normal weight, overweight, or obese. However, due to the wide variety of body types, the distribution of muscle and bone mass, etc., it is not appropriate to use this as the only or final indication for diagnosis.
BMI = ((Your Weight)/(Your height in cm X Your height in cm)) X 10000
Severe Thinness < 16
Moderate Thinness 16 - 17
Mild Thinness 17 - 18.5
Normal 18.5 - 25
Overweight 25 - 30
Obese Class I 30 - 35
Obese Class II 35 - 40
Obese Class III > 40
